Children’s literature is the most deceptively difficult translation work there is. The vocabulary is simple; everything else is not. Rhymes must still rhyme. Jokes must still be funny. Names must feel right in a French mouth. The rhythm must carry a bedtime reading.
My approach:

- Cultural adaptation with respect: what would puzzle a French child is adapted, what makes the book special stays

Do you translate rhyming or rhythmic text?
Yes, and that is where translation becomes rewriting: I preserve the music and the fun first, because a children’s book that does not sound good read aloud does not work, whatever the dictionary says.

Yes. Many of my favourite projects come from independent authors bringing their book to the French market. I keep the process simple and the communication direct.
Can you adapt cultural references for French children?
That is the heart of the job: names, jokes, food, school life. I adapt what would puzzle a French child and keep what makes your book yours, always with your agreement.
